FAYETTEVILLE — The transfer portal is closed now, but while no more prospects can enter the schools can still sign recruits.

Arkansas has some opening spots still remaining for 2024. They will play host to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College freshman running back Tyrell Reed, 5-10, 195, beginning Thursday and then Florida Atlantic defensive tackle Decarius Hawthorne, 6-2, 295, on Sunday.

The Hogs recently lost Dominique Johnson from the running back room so Reed would fit as a replacement for him. The Razorbacks like to have five running backs on scholarship and currently have four. Rashod Dubinion is the lone holdover from last season. They added Utah’s Ja’Quinden Jackson and Florida State’s Rodney Hill through the portal. Benton’s Braylen Russell signed in December.

In 11 games in 2023, Hill carried 132 times for 833 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught a pass for five yards. He returned two kickoffs for 22 yards. Hill is a speedster from Topeka (Kan.) Lawrence.

Sam Pittman has said the Hogs would like to sign a pair of defensive tackles in this class. They currently have none. They recently hosted Grand Valley State’s Jay’vier Suggs, 6-3, 295, but he’s still adding offers and is at close to 40 now. He has also visited Wisconsin. Oklahoma and Michigan jumped into the mix this week as well as others.

Hawthorne saw action in 12 games for FAU this season. He had 18 tackles, nine solo, seven for loss, 4.5 sacks and four quarterback hurries. He was a senior at FAU after playing high school at Birmingham (Ala.) Center Point.
