Update:

Chivas are still searching for a head coach, and the process has taken far longer than expected. This Tuesday marks exactly one month since Guadalajara was eliminated from the 2025 Clausura. Gerardo Espinoza was promptly removed from his position, yet as of today, the club has yet to appoint a permanent coach for the upcoming Apertura 2025.

A new name has entered the mix for the Rebaño Sagrado: Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio. The 63-year-old, who was in charge of Mexico’s national team during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is now a candidate to take the reins at Chivas. His profile has reportedly caught the interest of certain members of the club’s management.

Sources close to Chivas have revealed that the Colombian has gained traction in the club’s search for a new manager. Talks with Juan Carlos Osorio are progressing positively, and sporting director Javier Mier has been left with a strong impression of the strategist, both personally and professionally.

Other candidates for the Chivas job

Several other candidates have been on Chivas’ radar. At one point, Spanish coach Domènec Torrent had reached a full agreement to take over as manager, but last-minute contractual details ultimately derailed the negotiations. Later, Argentine coach Gabriel Milito was considered, though discussions eventually cooled.

Juan Carlos Osorio’s name is now gaining serious momentum in Chivas’ coaching search. He checks several key boxes the club was looking for in a new manager: he knows Mexican soccer inside and out, having recently worked with Xolos de Tijuana and previously managed Puebla. Most notably, his experience leading Mexico’s national team to the Round of 16 in the 2018 World Cup adds significant weight to his candidacy.

Chivas are due to return from vacation next Wednesday, and if a new head coach hasn’t been officially announced by then, José Meléndez is expected to oversee the team’s arrival and kick off preseason preparations. Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Osorio continues to gain momentum in negotiations and could soon be named Guadalajara’s next manager.
